Ruins of a Dutch trading post at the mouth of the Berbice River, steeped in history from the 1763 slave revolt led by Cuffy — Guyana's national hero.
Fort Nassau, originally a Dutch trading post at the mouth of the Berbice River, is one of Guyana's most historically significant sites.
Though primarily in ruins today, the fort's story is deeply intertwined with one of the most important events in Guyanese history — the 1763 slave revolt led by Cuffy (now honoured as Guyana's national hero). The revolt, also known as the Berbice Slave Uprising, was one of the largest slave rebellions in the Caribbean and a defining moment in the struggle for freedom.
Visiting Fort Nassau is a pilgrimage to the roots of Guyanese resistance and national identity.
