“Artist-archaeologist — from the Slade to Guyana's heritage”
Denis Williams (1923–1998) studied at Camberwell School of Art on a British Council scholarship and taught at the Slade School of Art in London. He mentored notable Nigerian artists at the Mbari Mbayo Club in Osogbo before returning to Guyana as Director of Art and Archaeology. He received the Golden Arrow of Achievement in 1973 and the Cacique Crown of Honour in 1989.
