“Poet of resistance and independence”
Martin Carter (1927–1997) is regarded as one of the greatest Caribbean poets of the twentieth century. Imprisoned twice by the British for his political activism, his collection "Poems of Resistance from British Guiana" (1954) became a rallying cry for independence. His work has been compared to that of Yeats and Neruda.
