“London's first Black headteacher — Windrush pioneer”
Beryl Gilroy (1924–2001) was a Guyanese novelist, educator, and ethno-psychotherapist who became London's first Black headteacher. Part of the Windrush generation, she pioneered Black representation in UK children's literature with her Nippers series (1970–1975). Her novel "Frangipani House" (1986) explored the experiences of elderly Caribbean women and became a set text in universities worldwide.
