“First Amerindian West Indian — Wisden legend”
Born in Port Mourant in 1933, Basil Butcher was the first person of Amerindian descent to represent the West Indies at cricket. A reliable middle-order batsman in the star-studded 1960s team, his 133 at Lord's in 1963 and highest score of 209* are remembered as masterclasses. Named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1970. He passed away in 2019.
