Born in London in 1960 to Guyanese parents and raised in Guyana until age 12, Fred D'Aguiar is a prize-winning novelist, poet, and playwright. His novel "The Longest Memory" (1994) won the Whitbread First Novel Award, and his poetry collection "Mama Dot" (1985) won the Guyana Poetry Prize. He is Professor of English at UCLA.
