“The calypsonian who conquered Trinidad”
Lord Canary (1937–2016) achieved the rare feat of beating the Mighty Sparrow in Trinidad calypso competitions — a near-impossible accomplishment for any non-Trinidadian artist. His songs "Cockle" and "Tribute to Martin Luther King" made him one of the most acclaimed Guyanese calypsonians of the twentieth century. He later served as Minister of Culture and Member of Parliament.
