“Guyana's visionary novelist — knighted for literature”
Wilson Harris (1921–2018) was one of the most original voices in postcolonial English literature. Born in New Amsterdam, he worked as a government surveyor before moving to England in 1959. His debut novel "Palace of the Peacock" (1960) — approved for publication by T.S. Eliot — became the first of The Guyana Quartet. He wrote 26 novels and was knighted in 2010.
